A 29-year-old miner was fatally stabbed by his co-worker in the wee hours of yesterday at Reserve Baramita, North West District (NWD), Region One.

The deceased has been identified by the police as Roy Harry of Wauna, Mabaruma, NWD.

The police said the suspect was apprehended during an escape bid and he later confessed to the crime.

The fatal altercation occurred sometime between 03:00 hrs and 04:00 hrs.

According to a Guyana Police Force statement, the now deceased man and the 21-year-old suspect, who both worked at the same mining camp, were drinking alcohol at New Star Backdam, Baramita, when they had a misunderstanding over a female acquaintance.

They then left together for their camp and thereafter got into a further argument which subsequently resulted in the suspect allegedly assaulting Harry and stabbing him with a knife.

At about 04:00 hrs, the police said, the suspect related what occurred to Michael Greene, a mechanic at the same camp, and then left on the claim that he was going to the police station to report the killing.

Upon hearing the news, Green rushed over to the camp that had been shared by Harry and the suspect and found the deceased lying motionless on the ground with what appeared to be a stab wound to his chest. The man then made a report to the police via telephone.

Ranks of the Baramita Police Station were immediately dispatched to the location to conduct investigations.

Additionally, escape routes were also monitored by investigators, who later captured the suspect around 08:00 hrs. He was seen walking along a trail at Reserve, Baramita. It did not lead to the police station.

The suspect is presently in police custody at the Baramita Police Station and is said to be co-operating with investigators.
