Woman fearful as son escapes from psychiatric ward

A 56-year-old woman is in fear for her life as her son who has threatened her life on multiple occasions, has  escaped from the psychiatric ward where he had been sent.

Sherry Daniels said that her son on Wednesday escaped from the psychiatric ward here in Georgetown following a court hearing at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

“We went to court today and the magistrate tell me that he’s insane and I got to sign a petition form that he’s totally insane so that he could go at the psych and get the treatment,” Daniels said. She related that he was previously placed at the psychiatric hospital only to escape and begin threatening her life again.

According to Daniels, an incident occurred on December 26 where her son came to the house where she lives and told her that he would kill her and it was then he launched an attack at the home. Daniels recounted that it was this issue that led him to be arrested and placed before the courts on Wednesday.

She recalled that the incident that took place on Boxing Day saw her son breaking windows at the home along with other destructive acts, however, at that time she was able to escape from the home unharmed. “It’s just me alone and me ain’t got no help, it’s just the police I got to go to,” the fearful woman lamented.

The woman told this newspaper that it was while she was speaking to the doctors at the Georgetown Public Hospital that she heard an officer say, “He gone again,” and so was made aware that he had escaped.

While she explained that there are a number of financial constraints, she added that she was afraid that if she went to the home, he would be there to make another attempt to kill her.

The 56-year-old said that currently she was not aware if he had been recaptured or whether any efforts were being made to place him in custody and have him subsequently transferred to the Psychiatric Hospital in Berbice.
