Inspectors attached to the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) were yesterday assaulted while attempting to seize substandard electrical fittings from a West Coast Demerara hardware store.

GNBS in a press release stated that the incident occurred at the Carrefour Hardware Store located on the West Coast of Demerara as the inspectors were carrying out routine inspection activities. During the activity, the inspectors discovered items that did not meet the labelling requirements of GNBS and as such the proprietor of the business was told that the items were going to be seized.

It was during the effort to seize the items that the female owner obstructed the inspectors from doing same and began to physically assault one of the male inspectors, and as a result the police were called to the scene. The owner who was not named was arrested and taken to the Den Amstel Police Station where she was charged.

The GNBS seized 143 power supply cords, five of knife switches, 694 receptacles, 188 plugs and 248 lamp holders from the establishment.

According to the release, to obstruct inspectors from carrying out their functions is a contravention of the law and as such abrasive actions by any stakeholder will not be tolerated.
