Overseas-based Guyanese Shaheed Yusuf is planning to stage a countrywide knockout softball tournament this year.

Yusuf, a former Malteenoes Sports Club cricketer who was invited to trials for the regional cricket tournament, said one of the reasons for staging the tournament was because he wanted to give back to the sport.

The nationwide 10/10 tournament will see eight teams from eight designated zones competing in the knockout tournament.

The zones are Port Mourant- Skeldon, Port Mourant – Rose Hall, Rose Hall- Rosignol, Mahaicony – Abary, LBI – Mahaica, Better Hope – Liliendaal and Georgetown one and two.

According to Shaheed some of the spin offs of the tournament are that the communities will have alternative entertainment; that youths and others will be beneficially occupied; that the grounds will be continuously maintained, that sports businesses will benefit, that umpires and scorers will be employed, that social media and other media outlets including newspapers be occupied and that hotels and restaurants will benefit.

“The objective is to stimulate and motivate the entire country enthusiast with quick results, quick rewards, quick recognition and other benefits,” said Shaheed.
