Construction worker remanded on charges of robbery under arms

A construction worker, who police said robbed two men at David Street, Kitty was on Wednesday charged and remanded.

21-year-old Romel Whyte, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where Magistrate, Annette Singh, read the charges. It is alleged that on January 22, at David Street, Kitty, Georgetown, while armed with a gun, he robbed Binnet Khan of a cellphone valued $65,000. It is also alleged that on the same date, and at the same location, he robbed Barichan Madrid of $54,000 cash.

The construction worker denied both charges. Whyte’s attorney told the court that his client was innocent of the charges and said that Whyte was willing to submit to any conditions attached to reasonable bail. However, the Police Prosecutor objected to Whyte’s application for bail. The objection, was based on the grounds of the seriousness of the offence, but also predicated on the dangerous weapon used and prevalence of the offence. The Magistrate denied Whyte bail and adjourned the matter until February 16.
