An investigations is ongoing into the death of 19-year-old miner Renaldo Rampersaud, who is reported to have drowned in the Mazaruni River on Tuesday.

According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Rampersaud is suspected to have drowned after the canoe in which he and a co-worker had been travelling sank.

The episode occurred around 16:00 hrs between ‘Luw Luw’ Island Point and Banana Landing, Middle Mazaruni River.

The GPF said Rampersaud and his co-worker departed their work site at Cashew Creek backdam and headed to Banana Landing, where they purchased some items from a shop.

However, on their way back, while paddling, in the vicinity of ‘Luw Luw,’ the canoe began to take in water and it eventually sank.

The GPF said the other male managed to swim to shore but Rampersaud went under and never resurfaced. A search party was launched and about 16:50 hrs Rampersaud’s body was discovered by his brother, Joshua Williams, in the area.

The GPF noted that Rampersaud and his co-worker were employed by Nesha Joseph, who owns a dredge at Cashew Creek backdam.
