Dear Editor,
The announcement in the 2022 National Budget that a number of Regional Hospitals will be constructed in various Regions in Guyana cannot, in all good conscience, be decried.
For too long Guyanese, particularly not within proximity of the Georgetown Public Hospital, have had to make do with “band-aid” medical help until they can arrive at the GPH or another hospital for more professional attention. Because of distance, many have died before reaching a hospital. It is not far-fetched to assume that many nurses live great distances away from the GPH and that takes its own toll on their pockets, time and effectiveness.
Regional Hospitals signal a host of positives, from more accessible patient care to medical personnel having the opportunity to work nearer home to upward mobility in a larger working medical population. It also opens the possibility for these Hospitals to offer specialized services. In some countries there are “kidney hospitals”, “heart hospitals”, etc. Why not in Guyana?
For certain, the congestion, traffic and otherwise, at the GPH – a nightmare to say the least – will be significantly reduced. Also, more persons will find employment.
As Guyanese, we need to widen our vistas beyond narrow political patronage. “The greater good for the greater number” must take precedence for us as a people. The constant battle amongst political parties rob us of our collective identity, which hinders our collective progress.
I give kudos to the present Administration for its recognition for more expansive and convenient health care in the form of the Hospitals touted in the Budget and for the over-all progressive measures detailed therein.
