A clothes vendor was stabbed to death on Tues-day night during a fight with another man at Hardina Street, between Norton and D’Urban streets.

Dead is 40-year-old Aubrey Baird of Lot 22 E Hardina Street, George-town.

According to a Guyana Police Force (GPF) press release, eyewitnesses said that around 21:00 hrs, Baird and another man were seen scuffling in a drain. During the altercation, Baird reportedly dealt the suspect a blow to his body with a piece of wood.

However, in retaliation the 46-year-old male suspect, who was armed with a knife, dealt Baird two stab wounds to the left side of his upper chest. The suspect attempted to escape on a bicycle but was apprehended by public-spirited citizens, who later handed him over to the police.

Baird was picked up and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he died at approximately 21:40 hrs while receiving treatment.

The suspect was also escorted to the hospital, where he was admitted as a patient in stable condition. He remains there under guard.

Baird’s wife, Devon Grandison, told Stabroek News that the post-mortem examination was conducted yesterday and revealed that her husband died of multiple stab wounds to the chest.

Grandison stated that at the time of the fatal altercation she was in her nearby home, from where she heard loud noises. She said that up to yesterday she was still not aware what the argument was about and that she had never seen her husband’s assailant before.

“All I deh upstairs and I hear people quarrelling. I don’t even know the man and what the argument was about. Last night is the first time I see the man picture at the hospital,” said the grieving woman.
