West Berbice youth dies after crashing into bus

A West Coast Berbice youth is now dead after he crashed into a bus while riding his motorcycle along the Number 8 Village Public Road on Saturday.

Dead is Devon McCalman, 21, of Number 10 Village, West Coast Berbice.

The accident occurred around 11.30 hrs.

Both McCalman, who was riding motorcycle CF 2986, and bus driver, Jainarayan Persaud, 41, of Lot 14 Number 7 Village, West Coast Berbice, who was driving minibus BXX 4066, were proceeding in the same direction along the road.

Stabroek News was told, that Persaud stopped to pick up a passenger and McCalman collided with the rear of the bus, causing him to fall onto the roadway, which resulted in him receiving injuries about his body.

Also as a result of the impact of the motorcycle hitting the bus, the entire rear windscreen on the minibus was shattered.

McCalman was picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver of the minibus has since been arrested as an investigation has been launched.
