The Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) is seeking stronger ties with the international chess community to assist in its ongoing programme of development.

Recently, Vice-President of the GCF Anand Raghunauth attended a meeting in Mexico City, Mexico, at which President of FIDE (World Chess Federation) Arkady Dvorkovich and other senior officials of chess administration for the Americas were present. At that forum, Raghunauth outlined the GCF’s plans for the future. Promising agreements were made with the federations of Uruguay, Costa Rica and Barbados for mutual support.

The first joint project would be to assist the GCF to acquire FIDE ratings and titles, the first step towards producing a grandmaster. Hybrid tournaments will be introduced, where competing players would be placed in a single location to oppose players from another country in a similar location and the process will be supervised by FIDE arbiters to forestall cheating. This type of exposure will enable the GCF to create a larger pool of rated players.

On the international scene, American grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura defeated Armenian grandmaster Levon Aronian to capture the Berlin Grand Prix moving one step closer to the 2022 final of Candidates’ Tournament.
