Ministry rolling out new medical training programmes

A variety of medical training programmes targeting young Guyanese will soon be commencing. This is according to Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony in his Friday’s COVID-19 update.

Community Health Training Course, Pharmacy Aid Courses, Labora-tory Aid Courses, Nursing Courses and a new Bio-medical Technician Course are the progranmmes expected to come on line soon for the benefit of interested persons within the country. Anthony said that the community health course, the pharmacy aid course and the laboratory course was designed to benefit persons from the Hinterland Regions.

“We will be running several Community Health Training, these courses would be done in the regions like Region 9 and Region 1. We will be running training to do like Pharmacy Aids, Laboratory Aids,” stated the minister. He further noted that persons who already have a background in those areas will be the main beneficiaries. “These are people who would have the basic training in how to dispense, basic training in how to do simple test in the laboratory,” said Anthony.

The new Nursing Courses will be piloted in Guyana’s 3 Nursing Schools – Georgetown School of Nursing, New Amsterdam School of Nursing (New Amsterdam) and Charles Roza School of Nursing (Linden), while the new Biomedical Technician Course is expected to see about 40 persons being trained. The Biomedical course is a collaboration between the Ministry and a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO).

“There is a new course that we have introduced and that is for Biomedical Technician, and this will be done in collaboration with International Biomedical Aid, this is an NGO and they will be offering this particular course to locals, we intend to train about 40 persons using this organization,” noted the minister.

Additionally, the minister mentioned that two regional hospitals which were under construction, will soon be recommissioned while another two are in the process of being tendered for construction. “The district hospital at Leonora is being completed so very shortly we will recommission that hospital, the works at Mabaruma has just been completed so very shortly that too we will be recommissioning. We are starting works at the West Demerara Hospital, we expect that by March we should go out to tender for a company to come in to do the construction. Bartica similarly, we are in the process of going out to tender to get a company to do the construction, we hope to start by mid of this year,” stated Anthony.
