Several communities across Guyana experienced flooding as they were battered by continuous rainfall  over the last 24 hours.

Last evening, the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) said that rainfall will continue well into today across Guyana.

“Rainfall will measure as high as four inches (100mm) over Regions 1 to 8 and 10, and at least one and a half inches (40mm) elsewhere. Residents countrywide are urged to remain vigilant and cautious during this rainy period as low lying and flood prone areas are expected to be impacted,” the CDC said in an update.

Between the period February 22-23, the CDC reported Mabaruma in Region One recording 3.7 inches of fail, 4 inches in Charity in Region Two and approximately 2.1 inches in Region Five.

Region Five’s Chairman Vickchand Ramphal was out assessing the flood situation and said that the authorities are monitoring the situation.

Similarly, Georgetown Mayor Ubraj Narine was out checking on kokers and sluices to ensure that they are functional to drain the city. He also made visits to several pump stations to check their readiness to pump floodwaters from the affected communities. As usual, several communities in the capital city are under water.

The CDC is advising all precautions to be taken and any reports of intense flooding can be made to the local authorities or the National Emergency Monitoring System on 600-7500 or 226-1114.
