Truck driver in custody over Yarrowkabra fatal accident

The Guyana Police Force yesterday stated that a truck driver is in custody assisting with the investigation into the death of a porter who was run over by a truck while travelling on the Yarrowkabra Public Road.

It was reported that motor lorry GXX 2366 driven by Jerome Daniel Paddy, 48, of Lot 753 One Mile Wismar Linden and motor lorry GYY 6745 driven by Robert Hilbert, 47, of Lot 748 Section ‘B’, Block ‘X’, Diamond, East Bank Demerara, were travelling at about 15:10 hrs yesterday on the Yarrowkabra Public Road, Soesdyke/Linden Highway.

Hilbert’s truck had two passengers at the time. Yannick Pratt, the owner of the truck, who was in the cab, and Jomo Benjamin, a porter, who was in the tray of the truck. Meanwhile, Paddy, who was speeding along the western side of the road was reportedly overtaking a line of traffic. While overtaking, the left front side of the truck collided with the right side of the truck that Hilbert was driving in a northern direction, along the western side of the road. The police said that Hilbert was turning east into the Yarrowkabra Pump Road. As a result of the collision, Benjamin fell out of the vehicle and Paddy’s truck then drove over the man.

He was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty. The body was taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Parlour. Paddy is in custody assisting with investigations.
