Man accused of murdering pregnant ex-girlfriend captured, charged

Terrence Thomas, the East La Penitence, Georgetown man who was wanted for the murder of his pregnant ex-girlfriend, has been apprehended and charged with the crime.

Thomas, 34, was hauled before a magistrate at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court on Thursday and was remanded on a charge that he murdered Loretta Simon.

Simon, 24, of Cooper Street, Albouystown, was murdered at her mother’s ‘C’ Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown, home on January 27.

The police issued a wanted bulletin for Thomas the same day after he was identified as her assailant. The man was not apprehended until Monday, when he was found at a house in Queenstown, Georgetown.

The police had said that investigations revealed that Simon was at her mother’s home when Thomas, her ex-boyfriend, visited and demanded to know why she didn’t want to reunite with him. The police further said that eyewitnesses reported that the woman asked the suspect to leave her mother’s premises and he then pulled out a knife from his waistband and stabbed her in the region of her heart. She was able to walk a short distance before collapsing. The man escaped after the stabbing.

Emergency Medical Technicians from the  Alberttown Fire Station were summoned but Simon succumbed. She was later officially pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where she was rushed.

The woman’s mother later told reporters that her daughter was visiting her home and had been making curry at the time of the unwelcome visit of her ex. According relatives who were at home at the time, the man went to the yard, called for Simon and then lingered around before he stabbed her. It was also revealed by relatives that the woman and Thomas had broken up for some time and she was just over two months pregnant and in a relationship with the father of the child.
