West Indies Women’s team vice-captain, Anisa Mohammed, believes that her side will surprise a lot of teams in the ongoing International Cricket Council’s Women’s 50-overs-a-side World Cup.

Mohammed made these comments during the post-match conference yesterday after her side beat title holders England, by seven runs.

West Indies Women had also defeated New Zealand in the first match of the tournament.

The spinner reckoned that the Caribbean unit was not at their best in the 50-over format but contended players are finding form at the right time.

“I know a lot of teams have been counting us as underdogs. We have not been playing our best ODI [One Day International] cricket lately but we have nothing to lose. It is just a matter of us coming out here, having fun, keep believing in ourselves, keep believing we can win matches and show that we have quite a lot of teams to surprise in this tournament,” she said.

“I think we have quite some players who have been middling the ball, finding some form lately. I think they are finding the form at the right time, at the World Cup, we have quite a number of game changers and I think this time around a lot of them believe in themselves and as a team we believe in each other so it is just a matter of who ever goes out there, keep believing in themselves and we believe in them,” Mohammed added.

The 33-year-old, who sits third in the list of all-time female ODI wicket takers with 178 wickets, could move into second position shortly with three more wickets.

She admitted that the two wins will serve as a confidence booster for their chances in the tournament.

She noted, “To win two games against two of the top teams in this tournament is definitely a motivation for us and it kind of gives us the confidence knowing that if we can defeat the top teams, going forward, once we play our best game we can go all the way in this tournament.”

Mohammed credited the many “game changers” within the side who put their hands up at times to get West Indies Women over the line.
