Accidents between Zeeburg and De Willem

Dear Editor,

The recent horrific accident at De Willem made me do a little research using the newspapers and I discovered that the following took place within 10 years between the villages of Zeeburg – De Willem

November, 2011 – Arjune Rampersaud – was struck down and killed while attempting to cross the road at De Willem.

November, 2013 – Hasib Bulla, and Juman Ally were killed and a third injured after a car slammed into them at Tarla Dam, Meten-Meer Zorg,

June,  2014 – Imran Mohamed – attempted to cross the roadway on his bicycle and was struck down by a motor lorry.

November, 2014 – Kevin Sakichand – lost his life when the vehicle he was driving crashed into a parked car and a garage at Zeeburg

October, 2017- Khemraj Latchman –  died after a car collided with him on the Zeeburg Public Road.

June, 2018 – Roopchand Ramkellawan – was struck and killed along the De Willem Public Road.

March, 2019 – Bruce Williams – died after a hit-and-run accident along the Zeeburg Public Road.

September, 2020 -Somatti Persaud, who was struck and killed by a hire car along the Zeeburg Public Road.

July, 2021- Kenneth Smith – struck down and killed by a vehicle that ploughed through a fence at De Willem.

There were two more which I can remember but have not found in the newspapers. These are Patrick called Egyptian who lived at Zeeburg North and Lallay (call name).

As far as I can recall, I have no knowledge of  prosecutions for persons who were involved in these accidents. So what message are we as a society sending to operators of motor vehicles if there are no penalties for these offences. Therein lies the problem.  Some drivers believe that they can do as they please on the roads and get away with it and in some cases settle the matter. Perhaps the GPF would like to comment on this.

Yours sincerely,
