GCC hockey team places eighth in Big Apple tourney

The Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) female hockey outfit finished in eighth position in the 2022 Big Apple International Indoor Hockey Championship in Spring City, Pennsylvania, USA yesterday, after ending with a record of one win and four losses.

In the 7-8 placement encounter of the two day tournament, Philly Hockey Club (PHC) defeated GCC 1-0 on penalty strikes after regulation time ended 1-1. All three of GCC’s attempts to score from distance failed.

Prior to the shoot-out, Aliyah Gordon equalised for the Guyanese in the 22nd minute, after Rhiannon Holt had pushed PHC into the initial lead in the ninth minute.

Earlier, GCC lost to Northeast Premier 1-4 in a rematch of their previous pool fixture, which was won 4-3 by the former. Kerensa Fernandes scored in the 30th minute for the Guyanese. For the victors, Shannon Pereira tallied a double in the 28th and 37th minute, while Anna Bottino and Kellie Joyce scored in the 21st and 25th minute apiece.

Meanwhile, the Bourda based outfit suffered mixed fortunes on Saturday with a record of one win and two defeats.

GCC went down to Syracuse Sharks 1-7 in their first match. Abosaide Cadogan netted GCC’s lone goal in the 34th minute. For the Sharks, Florine van Boetzelaev led the rout with a hat-trick in the third, 23rd, and 33rd minute, while Eefke van den Nieuwenhof tallied a double in the seventh and 26th minute.

Adding goals in the 24th and 37th minute were Quirine Comans and Kate Proefrock respectively. In their second match, GCC defeated Northeast Premier 4-3. The quartet of Gabriella Xavier, Samantha Fernandes, Cadogan and Sarah Klautky scored in the fourth, 19th, 33rd and 36th minute respectively.

For the losers, Emma Bozek bagged a brace in the 27th and 35th minute while Dana Bozek scored in the sixth minute.

However, the Guyanese ended the day on a negative note, losing to Team Red 1-2. Aliyah Gordon was on target for the Guyanese in the third minute. For the victors, Brittney Hickernell and Katie Grant scored in the fifth and 28th minute respectively.

The 12 member roster, which was coached by Philip Fernandes, comprised Cadogan, Alysa Xavier, Xavier (Captain), Klautky, Makeda Harding, Madison Fernandes, Mickelly Rahaman, Kirsten Gomes, Kerensa Fernandes, Fernandes, Carina Moller, and Aliyah Gordon. The tournament frequently features teams from Canada and the United States of America.
