The Guyana Cricket Board announced yesterday the appointment of Ravindranauth Seeram as the new chairman of the senior selection panel.

Seeram replaces former West Indies and Guyana captain, Ramnaresh Sarwan, who has been appointed a selector on the Cricket West Indies’ senior and youth selection panels.

The 60-year-old Seeram represented Guyana in 67 first-class matches scoring three centuries and 12 half centuries over a decade from 1982. He also played 12 List A matches.

When Seeram moved from the batting crease, he enjoyed a role as head coach of the senior national side. The right-handed batsman also served as a member of the senior selection panel in the past.

Seeram’s duties are expected to get underway shortly with the third round of the West Indies Championship set to continue.

Guyana, who won the title five consecutive years under West Indies assistant coach, Rayon Griffith, before surrendering the title in the last season played to Barbados Pride, defeated the Windwards Volcanoes in the opening round but suffered defeat at the hands of Leewards Hurricanes in the second round.

All eyes will be on the decisions of the selection panel after former chairman, Sarwan made the decision to drop Christopher Barnwell from the Four-Day side. Sarwan had reportedly told sections of the press that while Barnwell will continue to play a role in the white-ball format, the selectors wanted to blood younger talents.

Barnwell turned 35 years in January and since his axing has dominated local cricket hitting back-to-back hefty centuries in the Georgetown Cricket Association’s first-division tournament.

Barnwell’s Demerara Cricket Club teammate, Trevon Griffith has also made a strong case for himself, hitting a blistering triple century in the GCA final.
