For the first time for the year, the Albion/Port Mourant Estate has surpassed its weekly sugar production target, according to the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo).

In a statement, GuySuCo said the estate exceeded its target for the week ending March 19 by 7.9%. “This was the first weekly target surpassed for the year 2022 in the sugar sector,” it said, while noting that as a result of the achievement, qualified workers (who worked 80% or more days available for the week) will benefit from an additional day’s pay, tax free.

According to GuySuCo, despite the challenges posed by the intermittent rainfall, which was measured at almost 30 mm during the past week and stalled the estate’s mechanical harvesting operations, Albion was able to leverage the improved cane quality, better harvesters’ attendance and increased human productivity on the fields to push past the weekly target.

The statement noted that at the commencement of the first crop, GuySuco introduced an improved Personal Performance Incentive (PPI) Scheme, which has seen a positive response from cane harvesters in the way of improved attendance and productivity.

The PPI rewards each worker progressively as they improve their productivity.   The Corporation has also implemented a similar incentive scheme for the Planters, fertilising crew and chemical weed control workers.

The statement noted that the Weekly Production Incentive (WPI) is one of several initiatives in place to boost employees’ productivity and was implemented on May 13, 1989. The payment of a WPI is based on the individual estate’s achievement of one hundred percent (100%) or more of its weekly sugar production target.

Once the targets are achieved, workers receives one additional day’s pay. If the Estate’s achievement is 130% or more of its target, then they will receive two days’ pay.
