A fire, suspected to be arson, on Friday evening destroyed a two-storey wooden house at Number 71 Village, Corentyne.

According to the owner of the house, Pushwattie Bridglall, 37, of Lot 10 Number 71 Village, Corentyne, the fire started around 23:00 hrs.

The woman explained that she resides next door to the premises and had rented it to a single male, who was over by her at the time of the fire.

According to Bridgelall, after they noticed flames emanating from the upper flat of the house, they phoned the Guyana Fire Service, which responded quickly. Firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire, thus preventing it from spreading to her house.

She estimated her losses to be around $300,000, noting that the second flat had a kitchen area, while the upper flat was just an open space where her tenant slept.

Meanwhile, Bridgelall said on Monday the tenant and a friend of his, who often visited the premises, were involved in an argument during which the friend threatened to kill him and burn the house.

As a result, her tenant decided to stay at her house since he was fearful that the other man would act on the threat.

The Guyana Police Force has since launched an investigation.
