Fire damages house at Bartica – arson suspected

A fire suspected to be arson has caused serious damage to the contents of a timber and concrete building yesterday morning at Agatash Village, Bartica, Region Seven.

According to a release from the Guyana Fire Service (GFS), yesterday morning at around 10:02 am, the GFS was alerted to a fire and water tender #98 from the Bartica Fire Station and its crew were immediately dispatched. The GFS informed that the structure is a one-flat timber and concrete building, owned by 57-year-old Elizabeth Singh, and occupied by 30-year-old Zelicia Fredericks.

The release noted that before firefighters could arrive, neighbours formed a bucket brigade in an attempt to extinguish the flames. The fire damaged and destroyed items in the house such as, clothing, beds, appliances, and furniture. 

The GFS has determined that fire was maliciously set by an unknown person or persons.
