The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) staged a competition management workshop Saturday for its regional member associations at the National Training Centre, Providence.

Wayne Forde, GFF president, during brief remarks stated that the forum was conducted in anticipation of the sport’s eventual resumption following the removal of the COVID-19 restrictions by the national Task Force.

He explained, “So we are doing a competition management workshop today where we have brought in individuals from all nine of our regional associations.”

According to Forde they were looking at areas vital to the resumption of football activities and the necessary protocols.

“And we are working through them all the protocols and management functions that are critical to the staging of a well-run competition. So, this is being done because as you may be aware, the restrictions have been lifted, and we have received formal approval from the government that we bring football back to the pitch,” he added.

According to Forde, the federation is taking advantage of the current situation so as to ensure that its membership is properly equipped for the recommencement of play, adding that the workshop focuses on the best practices in managing tournaments.

He expounded, “It’s been almost 24 months since we’ve had any league or anything being played. So we are excited to do that. But we are taking advantage of the opportunity that we have now to ensure that our members are given the information and the tools to lift the standard of competitions at the regional association levels. So this workshop covers several presentations on best practices. And it also has a practical component where the under 16 boys who were preparing for a tournament that will take place in Europe in April, will be playing the under 20 boys. So the team here will manage this game today.”

Forde the aim is to have a GFF staff at all the regional member associations.

“I think one of the main tools that we’re using is that each member of our competition staff is assigned to a regional association. So when they make their first step in organizing competition there will be a GFF staff within the association. Also when we put on international games members have been working alongside us. So those are the opportunities that they will have to understand and to witness firsthand how things are done at a certain level,” he added.
