Venezuelan gets 12 months in jail for simple larceny

A Venezuelan national was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment for simple larceny on Wednesday.

Janithan Garcia, 28, of North Road, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on a charge that between March 19 and 20, 2022, at Cummings Street, Bourda, he stole a Samsung Galaxy cellular phone valued $200,000, a pair of Timberland sneakers, valued $29,000, and a pair of Aldo sneakers, valued $16,000 – a total of $245,000 – being the property of Sharmilla Watson.

Garcia pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced.

He also faced another charge. It was alleged that between the same dates and at the same address, the accused stole a Samsung smartwatch worth $70,000, a Samsung cellular phone worth $380,000, a pair of Nike sneakers valued at $20,000, a baseball cap worth $9,000 and a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses valued at $26,000 – a total of $505,000 – being the property of Ashbel Watson.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge and the matter was adjourned until March 30.
