Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn is looking for other possible locations for the operations of more water taxis along the Demerara River.

According to the Ministry’s Facebook page, visits were made by the Minister along the eastern Demerara Riverbank in the vicinity of the Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB) last Saturday, and Tuesday, by boat along the river.

The search for feasible locations is intended to reduce the traffic congestion in developed areas such as Georgetown and for commuters along the West Bank of Demerara and the West Coast during the busy hours.

“This is a possible solution to significantly reduce the traffic congestion problems in developed areas such as Georgetown and its environs and for the commuters along the West Bank and West Coast areas during the peak hours,” said Benn.

Some of the areas that were identified were Grove\Diamond, Wales and La Grange.

The post also stated that Benn was examining a possible location for the operation of a river barge. He opined that the barge can transport sand trucks and other heavy duty vehicles across the river, which may also ease the traffic congestion on the DHB while the government awaits the construction of the new bridge.
