All efforts to legislate a professional engineering bill have been unsuccessful

Dear Editor,

Stabroek News edition of Thursday, March 31, 2022, under the caption, “GRA List of Professionals for which Practice Certificates were approved as of March 17, 2022”, refers. Of the 147 names and listed professions it is to be observed that the profession of engineer is not mentioned. Why is this? Are engineers delinquent in not registering? Truth be told professional engineers, unlike medical practitioners, dental surgeons, attorneys-at-law etc. are not recognized under the constitution. Guyana may be one of the few countries in the world that does not require professional engineering registration. Each of our sister Caribbean countries like Trinidad &Tobago, Barbados, Antigua & Barbuda has a professional engineering bill. Since the 1970s this anomaly was brought to the then Government, and successive Governments of Guyana. To date, all efforts have been unsuccessful. The situation is more dire now that oil & gas industry, in which industry foreign engineers prevail and dominate the Guyana economy.

Sincerely,

Abraham David
