Nicolette last remaining hope for singles medal

Experienced campaigner Nicolette Fernandes remains Guyana’s lone representative in the individual section of the PanAm Senior Squash Championship in Guatemala following defeats to teammates Ashley Khalil and Mary Fung A Fat in the women’s pool yesterday.

Fernandes made light work of Lucia Bautista of Columbia 11/9, 8/11, 11/2, 11/8. The former Caribbean champion will now oppose Maria Min of Canada in the next round.

Ashley Khalil, who swept Emma Turnball of Cayman Island in her first match, went down to Valentina Portieri of Argentina in a five-set thriller 9/11, 10/12, 11/9, 11/7, 10/12 while Mary Fung A Fat lost to Ariana Alva of Ecuador in straight sets 6/11 8/11 8/11. The individual male players were  eliminated on the opening day.

The doubles category commences tomorrow, with siblings Jason and Ashley Khalil teaming in the mixed doubles and  Kristian Jeffrey and Alex Arjoon in the men’s doubles.

Fung A Fat and Gabby Fraser will contest  the women’s doubles.

The team event will get underway Friday and end Saturday.
