Ulverston fisherman missing, feared drowned

An Ulverston, Corentyne fisherman is feared dead after he reportedly fell overboard while fishing in the Corentyne River on Monday evening.

The captain and three fishermen who were on the boat have since been placed into police custody for questioning.

Kallicharran Mohabir, 52, a father of one, of Lot 14 Ulverston Village left home on Monday to head out to fish in the Corentyne River. According to relatives, he had told them that they were going to fish in the vicinity of Rose Hall Town, Corentyne “in the deep water.”

His sister, Gaitrie Mohabir, 50, last evening told Stabroek News that the boat owner informed the family on Tuesday that the captain of the boat had phoned her to relay that Mohabir fell overboard and they could not locate him.

“She come and say how them boys hear splash and he fall and them na see”, the sister said she was told.

A report has since been filed at the Whim Police Station and the captain along with the three fishermen who were on the boat were taken into custody for questioning after they returned from sea.

“We go station yesterday and them police fight she (boat owner) up because she supposed to send people to search and whole day she deh station.”

Two of the missing man’s brothers have decided that they will head out today to search for him.

Gaitrie last evening noted, that her brother lived alone a short distance away from her and that their family is extremely worried. She said, the man spent most of his life working in Suriname but returned to Guyana due to Covid–19.

This is the second time he would have gone out to sea to fish since returning to Guyana.
