Top seed Rajiv Lee along with Ethan Lee and Ricardo Narine were the leaders after three rounds of the Guyana Chess Federation De Sinco/Beep Products-sponsored national junior chess championships qualifiers at the National Stadium Sunday.

The three are the only unbeaten players after day two of the four-day championships.

Ethan Lee managed a win against Kyle Couchman in an exhausting four-hour struggle for dominance in Sunday’s Final round.

With both players playing solidly Lee was able to squeeze a

tiny advantage from Couchman in the endgame which he duly converted to a win with seconds remaining

on both players’ clocks. Lee’s other wins came against Landon Mohabir, Kishan Puran and Tejasvarun Kandavel in the first three rounds.

Ricardo Narine was paired against his former school mate, Queen’s College’s Raveon Adonis in Round 4.

Explosive positions filled with tactics erupted from the very beginning, as the two players fought for the advantage and Adonis subsequently succumbed to the complexity of the position, allowing Narine to finish the game with cruel efficiency.

Narine’s other points came against Javier Davenand, Morven Barran and Anasie Fredericks.

Rajiv Lee and Jessica Callender took a different approach than the other players in Round 4 today, as the positional dance for dominance began right after the opening. This game was not won with brute calculation and

prediction, but with experienced precision. The two traded into an endgame where Lee simply had a better position than Callender, whilst being up no

material. Callender held valiantly, but Lee ended up winning

enough material to claim victory. He had earlier defeated Jacob McDonald, Udhyam Lekhraj and Justin Goberdhan.

Pooja Lam and Sasha Shariff were also unbeaten after three rounds and were paired against each other in the fourth round. That match ended in a draw.
