Trio charged after Goedverwagting contractor shot in home invasion

Three men were yesterday charged with the armed robbery of a 50-year-old resident of Goedverwagting Squatting Area, East Coast Demerara during a home invasion on April 6.

They pleaded not guilty and were remanded to prison.

Those charged are: Adrian Fernandes, 30, a labourer of South Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara; Gladwin McDonald, 30, a labourer of Goedverwagting Squatting Area, East Coast Demerara; and 23-year-old Emanuel Payne of Lot 128 Goedverwagting Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara.

The men who were jointly charged with the armed robbery of Alex Adridge yesterday attended the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court #2 where they appeared before Magistrate Alisha George.

McDonald was arrested on April 10 while both Fernandes and Payne were arrested on April 11 by ranks of Sparendaam Police Station.

The suspects have been remanded to prison until May 16.

On the day in question, four men, one of whom was armed with a handgun, broke into the home of the victim, Adridge of Lot 23 Goedverwagting Squatting Area.

According to a police report, the victim was awakened by a noise in his house. He went to his living room where he was confronted by the thieves. In a bid to prevent being robbed, Adridge tried fighting the men off during which he was shot in his upper right leg by the armed suspect.

The suspects carted off four gold rings valued $150,000, one silver chain valued $80,000 and $5,000 in cash.

Following the robbery, the police were able to obtain CCTV footage.
