Dead porkknocker identified as Britannia man

A porkknocker who allegedly drowned at a creek at Obanna Backdam in Kuribrong, Potaro on April 15th, 2022 has been identified as Iftikhar Haniff Hussain.

Police say that after a post on their Facebook page a number of persons came forward to identify the 33-year-old man who hails from Britannia Village, West Coast Berbice.

The scene of the reported drowning was visited on April 17, 2022 at about 09:45hrs by Asp Pitt, Sgt 18871 Clarke, Cpl 20676 Pickering and Const 22022 Jones. Enquiries revealed, police say,  that Hussain was employed by Leon Lowe, who has a mining operation about 45 minutes by boat from Obanna landing.

On April 15, at about 19:00 hrs, the now deceased man and another male called ‘Blackboy’ were trying to cross over Caiman creek on a piece of wood from the backdam to go to the landing.

The water was very high and Hussain reportedly slipped off the wood, went under the surface of the water and vanished.

The police say that ‘Blackboy’ managed to cross the creek, went to Lowe at the Landing and told him what happened.

Lowe and others went to check for Hussain but did not locate him.

A report was then made to the police.

On April 16th, 2022, at about 11:30hrs, Lowe and others continued to search and found the body of the deceased in the creek. No foul play is suspected, the police said.
