Rawl DaCosta of Lower Pomeroon River, Region Two was yesterday sentenced to 18 months imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to an unlawful wounding charge.

DaCosta made his appearance virtually before Magistrate Allan Wilson.

He had pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him and was remanded until May 15.  However, upon hearing that he would be remanded he opted to change his plea to guilty.

Prosecutor Ramesh Chattergoon objected to bail for his not guilty plea. Chattergoon informed the magistrate that DaCosta was before the court for a similar offence and had pleaded guilty and was fined $10,000.

The court heard that on April 11, DaCosta unlawfully assaulted his wife at Pomeroon. The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras and the victim was hospitalised. She received stitches to her head.

DaCosta was arrested and later released on $50,000 station bail. In the video that circulated on Facebook, the accused was seen hitting the woman’s head against a post, as he choked and slapped her. He also ripped the woman’s shirt and brassiere leaving her half-naked.

DaCosta was not represented and appeared remorseful in court. He also broke down in tears when the sentence was read to him.
