Power shutdown occurred after contractors damaged transmission line – Indar

A shutdown of GPL’s  Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS) occurred today after contractors working in the Diamond Housing Scheme damaged the 69 kVA transmission line.

This is according to Minister in the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar who posted a message on his Facebook page this afternoon.

“Earlier today GPL experienced a total shutdown and we lost power on the DBIS affecting thousands of persons.

“After many checks, we came to understand that private contractors operating excavators behind Diamond housing scheme cause significant damage to the 69000 volts (69 kVA) transmission line.

“This damage cause a feedback and a shutdown to Garden of Eden Plants and others. Up to this time Wartsila Engineers are sparing no efforts to get the plants up at Garden of Eden”, Indar said.

He added that the GPL team is in the backlands repairing the damaged transmission line and that some communities are still out of power as 46.5 MW of generation is still not back up.
