A mason was last Friday remanded to prison on a charge that he murdered a fellow North West District (NWD) man.

Christopher Van-nooten, 48, of Barimanobo Creek, Mabaruma, NWD, appeared via Zoom before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charge.

It is alleged that he murdered Sherwin Smith, 44, of Kumaka Water Front, NWD.

Van-nooten was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison until May 17, 2022.

Police say Van-nooten stabbed Smith on Easter Monday, April 18, 2022, at the Mabaruma Settlement Ground.

Police had reported that on that date, a policeman, who was on duty at the eastern gate of the ground, saw when the suspect was approaching Smith with a knife.

The suspect went up to Smith and dealt him two stab wounds about his body. The officer quickly intervened and disarmed the accused.

Smith ran to a nearby car and was rushed to the Mabaruma Regional Hospital, where he was treated for injuries to the left side of his abdomen and to his neck.  He later succumbed to his injuries at about 20:00hrs on the same date.
