Stewart, Smith win marquee events

Akeem Stewart and Keliza Smith won the blue riband 100m and 200m events when the inaugural Arrowhead League got underway last evening at the National Track and Field Centre. 

Stewart had a rocket start out of lane four and never took his spikes off the gas. 

The diminutive but muscular sprinter powered across the line in a brisk 10.40s to take the win.

Noelex Holder (10.48s) and Shamar Horatio (10.50s) joined him on the podium.  

In the half lap event, Smith blazed off the bend and turned on the jets on the homestretch to further extend her dominance on the local sprint circuit. 

In a new personal best of 23.99s, Smith who narrowly missed medals at the just concluded CARIFTA Games in Jamaica, led Ruth Sanmooogan (24.57) and Natrena Hooper (25.10) onto the podium. 

Scheduled for a 17:00hrs start, the event, which got off to a false start two and a half hours later, also saw Leslain Baird winning the javelin in his return to competition after 13 months. 

In his first meet since suffering a knee injury, the national javelin record holder threw 70.06m with just a five-step run up, bettering Kleon Spellen (66.09m) in the first of the five part Diamond League style series.  

Other winners last evening included Marlon Nicholson (men’s 1500m), Simeon Adams (400m) and Attoya Harvey (women’s 800m).  The second part of the series will be staged today at the same venue at 16:00hrs. 

The women’s 100m, men’s 200m, women’s javelin and women’s 1500m events will highlight the meet.
