Devaun Barrington put the nation on notice as to who is the best 800m athlete by out sprinting his competition in the final 300 metres in the highlight of meet two of the five-part Arrowhead League staged at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora on Sunday.

According to a release from the organisers, the race was hotly contested from start to finish with Barrington putting on the burners in the final 300 metres to best the likes of Nicholas Daw, Courtley Bobb and Daniel Melville is what could be deemed as the performance of the day.

Barrington won the two-lap event in 1:55.84s. Daw finished second in 1:56.68s while Bobb was third in 1:57.48s. Melville narrowly missed the podium with a time of 1:58.26s to finish fourth.

Narissa McPherson got a blistering start to win the women’s 400 metres

Meanwhile, the shock of the day happened when 200m winner and favorite Keliza Smith false started in the women’s 100 metres final. Her error cleared the path for Ruth Sanmoogan to take the win in 11.99s. Karese Lloyd finished second in 12.07s while Natrena Hooper finished third in 12.25s. 

However, Hooper disturbed the sand in 12.80m to win the women’s triple jump.

Fresh off a 400m silver medal performance at this year’s CARIFTA Games, Narissa McPherson picked up where she left off in Jamaica and clocked 57.09s to take an easy win in the women’s quarter mile race. Anallisa Redmond finished second in 59.22 second while veteran sprinter, Alisha Fortune finished third in 59.50s.

However, the most dominant performance of the day went to double CARIFTA Games javelin gold medalist, Anisha Gibbons throwing 42.69 metres to win the event easily over Stacy Wilson (27.95m) and Nariann King (24.45m).

After placing third in the 100m in the first meet on Saturday, Shemar Horatio returned to win the men’s 200m in a time of 21.50s with top sprinter Akeem Stewart pulling out of the race with a slight lower leg niggle. Noelex Holder, who finished second in the 100m final, placed second again in 21.76s while Revon Williams was third in 22.06s.

Carl Williams won the men’s long jump with 7.29m while Joshua Jones won the men’s discus throw with 38.05m to close out the day’s action.

The league will continues next month.
