Sophia murder suspect surrenders to cops

Denzil Haynes, the man wanted by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) over the fatal shooting of  a labourer in North Sophia, turned himself in to police on Tuesday afternoon and his lawyer said he would do all that he could to help police find the “real” killer.

Haynes, 24, surrendered to police at the Brickdam Police Station in the company of his lawyer, Bernard DaSilva.

“…I have given him some instructions and he’s prepared to defend whatever is the allegation,” DaSilva told reporters.

DaSilva also said that his client plans to cooperate with the GPF as he maintained that Haynes was not the person who was responsible for the killing of Yardan Jacobs.

“So as of now, let the police do their work and we will cooperate with the police. I have instructed him to cooperate fully with the police as far as his knowledge permits him…I am confident that the police will find the real killer,”  the lawyer said, before adding that several persons were also present at the time of the fatal shooting.

On Thursday last, a wanted bulletin was issued for Haynes in relation to the murder of Jacobs, 27, who succumbed to his injuries at a city hospital more than a week after the shooting.

Police, in a statement, said that Jacobs, of Lot 5S, North Sophia, died while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital around 17:00 hrs on April 26, 2022.   The shooting occurred on Saturday, April 16, just after midnight.

The police said Jacobs was liming with his friends when he reportedly got into an argument with the suspect. As a result, Jacobs’s cousin, Steve Bacchus intervened.

Subsequently, the suspect then pulled a firearm from his pants and discharged several rounds in the direction of the cousins, who were both struck.

Police said that Jacobs was shot in his abdomen while Bacchus was shot in his lower back.

Asked why the delay in his client turning himself over to the police, Da Silva explained that Haynes was in the interior when the bulletin was issued.

“…I have explained this to the Crime Chief and I have promised the Crime Chief to turn him in at 2:30 today and so I’m complying with that,” DaSilva added.
