TT U19 team in agonizing loss to T/dad

Guyana’s U-19 table tennis team lost a golden opportunity to qualify for the Pan Am games when they were beaten by Trinidad and Tobago Saturday as the Caribbean Youth Championships for U19 and U15 players continued in the Dominican Republic.

Needing to win to join the last four which would have guaranteed them automatic qualification, the Guyanese found Trinidad’s top player Derron Douglas too much to handle and bowed out 1-3.

Douglas defeated Niran Bissu 15-13, 12-10, 8-11 and 11-7 and Jonathan Van Lange 11-3, 10-12, 11-8 and 11-6 while Samuel Humphreys beat Krystian Sahadeo 11-6, 5-11, 11-6, 4-11 and 11-7 to seal the win.

Van Lange gained a consolation win for the Guyanese when he defeated defeated Ameer Mohamed 11-4, 11-3 and 11-6 in the reverse singles.

On Friday, the opening day, the Guyanese lost 1-3 to the Dominican Republic.

Van Lange lost to Cristopher Rodriguez, 8-11, 9-11 and 10-12 while Bissu lost to Abit Teajada 7-11, 6-11 and 5-11.

Sahadeo brought the Guyanese back into contention with a stirring 8-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-7 defeat of Andres Lora but Van Lange lost to Tejada 9-11, 10-12, 14-12 and 13-11.

The Under 19 boys’ team though, gained their first win by way of a walkover from Haiti in a consolation match.

Meanwhile the Under 15 team lost to the Dominican Republic 1-3 and Jamaica 0-3 to be eliminated from the competition.

Alexander Perez beat Malachi Moore 11-2, 11- 6 and 11-4, Alexander Tejada lost to Colin Wong 6-11, 11-7, 9-11 and 6-11, Dariel Del Rosario defeated Ebo Mc Neil 11-2, 11-5 and 11-9 and Perez beat Wong 11-9, 9-11, 7-11, 11-4 and 6-11.

Against Jamaica, Wong lost to Jayden Franks 13-11, 8-11, 11-13 and 5-11, Moore lost to Aziz Johnson 6-11, 6-11, 11-6 and 11-13 and Mc Neil lost to Gari Wythe 11-7, 11-7, 12-14, 9-11 and 9-11.

On Saturday, U15 boys defeated Grenada 3-0 in a consolation match.

Moore beat Dewayne Dinnoh-Newland 11-7, 11-5, 12-10, Wong beat Qwanell Walker 11-0, 11-6, 7-11, 11-4 and Mc Neil beat Clifton Romain 11-8, 11-6 and 11-4.

The Under 19 boys’ singles will commence this morning from 930am.

Van Lange in Group Three will play Rawson Harris of the Leeward Islands, Darling Castro of the Dominican Republic and Jabadiel Torres of Puerto Rico.

Bissu plays Samuel Humphreys of Trinidad, Rasheed Clarke of Jamaica and Abit Tejada of the Dominican Republic.

Sahadeo plays Donsley Estanus of Haiti, Andres Cedeno of the Dominican Republic and Matthew Fung of Jamaica.

The boys U15 singles event will commence tomorrow.
