Woman dies in Mahaica accident, others injured

Forty four year old Shazie Hoosain, of Greenfield, East Coast Demerara (ECD) died yesterday morning following an accident at Mahaica.

The accident occurred on the Handen Veldt Public Road, ECD at about 00:15 hrs and involved motorcar PJJ 485 which was being driven by Saif Arjune, 22.

According to a statement by the Guyana Police Force (GPF), reports revealed that Hoosain was an occupant of the said motorcar, along with Arfeen Arjune, 19, and a 16-year-old male.

Enquiries disclosed that the driver of the motorcar was proceeding east, along the northern side of the Handen Veldt public road, allegedly at a fast rate, when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with a utility pole which was located on the northern side of the road, and then crashed into a culvert.

As a result of the accident, the driver and other occupants suffered in-juries. Police ranks who arrived on the scene escorted the injured persons to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital where Hoosain was pronounced dead on arrival.

Hoosain’s body is currently at the Jerrick’s Funeral Home where it awaits a post mortem examination.

Police said that the driver and the 16-year-old who sustained a broken right leg were later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where they were both admitted as patients.

A breathalyzer test was later conducted on the driver which revealed alcohol in his system. The readings were .186% and .183% blood alcohol content.

Further investigations are said to be ongoing.
