Driver, 21, charged over Hand-en-Veldt fatal accident

Saif Arjune, aged 21 years, of Lot 35 Green Field, East Coast Demerara was yesterday  charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

In a statement, the police said that Arjune was also charged for driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

The man was the driver of the motorcar involved in the fatal accident that occurred on Monday May 9, 2022 on the Hand-en-Veldt Public Road, East Coast Demerara, which claimed the life of 44-year-old Shaziah Hoosain.

The accused appeared at Vigilance Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Magistrate Fabio Azore, where the charges were read to him.

He pleaded not guilty and was placed on $275,000 bail.

The matter was adjourn-ed until June 30, 2022.

According to the police, the motorcar was proceeding east, along the northern side of the Hand-en-Veldt public road allegedly at a fast rate, when Arjune lost control of the vehicle and collided with a utility pole which was located on the northern side of the road, and then crashed into a culvert.

As a result of the accident, the driver and other occupants suffered in-juries. They were transported to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital by police ranks and Hoosain was pronounced dead on arrival.

Due to injuries sustained, both Arjune and a 16-year-old were later transferred to GPH and admitted.

A Breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver which revealed readings of .186% and .183% of blood alcohol content in his system.
