Forty-eight-year-old Route 42 (Georgetown-Timehri) minibus driver Sherwin Reynolds who had been accused of raping a differently-abled woman back in 2018, was acquitted by a jury yesterday afternoon.

Following hours of deliberations, the foreman announced the unanimous verdict that Reynolds had been found not guilty of the offence.

The allegation had been that he had raped the 21-year-old woman on April 19th, 2018 at Timehri.

After the announcement of the verdict, Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry who presided over the trial told a visibly relieved Reynolds who was moved to tears that he had been found not guilty and that he was free to go.

It was alleged that on the day in question, the woman, who cannot speak, was a passenger of the bus driven by Reynolds, which transported her from Georgetown to Timehri.

The woman allegedly refused to exit the minibus and she was taken back to Georgetown. She remained in the bus and went for a second time to Timehri.

Reynolds, it was alleged, later drove the woman to a lonely spot and raped her.

The woman subsequently went home and informed her parents of what had happened.

There was a confrontation and the woman allegedly identified Reynolds, who was arrested and later charged.
