After Stabroek News published an article about a Princess Street man who was seeking the help of the public to purchase an electric wheelchair, his plea was answered yesterday when businessman, Azruddin Mohammed, donated a mobility scooter.

Gordon Ross who is paralyzed from the waist down received his brand new electric chair yesterday morning.

Ross visited Stabroek News last Tuesday asking for his story to be published. He told this newspaper that he has been paralyzed from his waist down for over three years now, and he has since been using a wheelchair as his form of mobility. However, the wheelchair was deteriorating and could not support his weight anymore.

“I’m paralyzed from the lower spine when I was working in the interior and I got a slip… I was coming down with some load on my shoulder and I slipped and that’s how I end up being paralyzed.”

“My problem presently now is having a good wheelchair to move around to earn my living, this chair that I normally use it can’t withstand the pressure, so I’m asking for assistance if anybody could assist me to get one of the electrical wheelchair,” Ross had said to Stabroek News.

After seeing Ross’s story, Mohammed said that on the same morning, about an hour after reading the article, Ross stopped by his business place but he was not there at the time.

“I saw the morning that you guys had it in the Stabroek papers and like an hour after he showed up at my business place here… but when he showed up I wasn’t around, so the guys collect the same article that you guys wrote because he left it here with a number.”

He said later in the day he managed to get in touch with Ross and yesterday morning, he (Ross) showed up with the mobility scooter and its seller.

“He came this morning and then when he came he also brought the same electric wheelchair and right away I said alright it’s a good cost and I bought it.”

The businessman said that his support for Ross is not done yet, since he would also be keeping an eye out for the person or persons who are trying to take advantage of Ross by robbing him of his honestly-earned dollar.

He is warning those individuals that if such actions continue, and they are caught, they will be handed over to the police. Ross had told Stabroek News about being robbed on several occasions.

Ross expressed gratitude for his new mobility scooter which he said will allow him to move around more efficiently and continue plying his trade.
