Campbell, John win first two stages

Riders from Team Foundation will roll into the hills of Linden this morning with the aim of a podium sweep following their heroics on day one of the 39th Independence Three-Stage road race which pedaled off yesterday in Berbice.  

Thanks to commanding wins by Akil Campbell and Jamual John in the first two stages, the team, which also includes star rider, Raynauth Jeffrey, will be eyeing a historic finish in the most prestigious and longest tenured local cycling event. 

Campbell of Trinidad, won the initial 40-mile stage from Corriverton to New Amsterdam with his breakaway teammate Jeffrey inches away. Deeraj Garbarran in placed third in excess of four minutes behind.

In the gruelling 60-mile second stage from Rosignol to CARIFESTA Avenue, John easily won ahead of Team Evolution’s Curtis Dey a few bike lengths behind. 

Junior cycling standout David Hicks finished third while Campbell out sprinted the peloton to finish fourth. 

Up to press time, the top five overall riders were still to be determined, however, Campbell remains the virtual leader ahead of today’s final stage. 

The third and final stage starts in the town of Linden and proceeds to Georgetown for the finish (65 miles) where the presentation of prizes will be done, at the conclusion.
