President of the Guyana Mixed Martial Arts Federation (GMMAF), Gavin Singh, met with Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken (Ag) on May 13 to discuss partnering with the force’s martial arts academy to develop mechanisms to promote the discipline.

According to Singh, some of the intangible aspects, and objectives that are being targeted for development include “Sportsman Leadership such as (1) the Power of Mind, (2) Winning: Goal or Gold, and From Dream to Reality.”

“Commissioner Hicken has always given his full support to development of the sport since we commenced discussions in 2019 and has been zealous for growth of his athletes. Hence the production of well-rounded athletes in the Guyana Police Force will help foster a better working culture and attitude towards their colleagues, superiors and citizenry.” He further stated, “We are currently in the process of having a program executed that will have the athletes certified in leadership. Training and development for all athletes is a major factor for the federation. This is the objective not only of the Guyana Mixed Martial Arts Federation, but also the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF).”

Meanwhile, Jason Fraser of the IMMAF (Head of Caribbean Region) also congratulated Hicken on his recent appointment.

“I must state that I had the privilege to meet with him on three occasions before, concerning the development of Mixed Martial Arts in the Guyana Police Force and its athletes which the commissioner is super passionate about for the future of Guyana Police Force club. I can only describe Commissioner Hicken as a visionary leader, one that believes in future proofing his vision for the Guyana Police Force in every aspect for the people of Guyana.”

“The Commissioner has always been committed to supporting the Guyana Police Force mixed martial arts team in their approach to achieve the highest level. Whether locally, regionally and internationally we, the IMMAF, will continue to work together for the development and best practices in moving forward in partnership with the Guyana Police Force mixed martial arts club and by extension all of Guyana through the Guyana Mixed Martial Arts Federation under its president, Gavin Singh. As we continue to grow from strength to strength we will be looking forward to greatness from all of Guyana in the mixed martial arts community,” he added.
