The Guyana Mixed Martial Arts Federation (GMMAF) four-member team which will compete in the Pan American Championship from June 22 to 24, departed local shores Thursday evening for Monterrey, Mexico.

This was confirmed by President of the GMMAF Gavin Singh, during a brief interview with Stabroek Sport yesterday.

According to Singh, “This is a historic day for the Our Cooperative Republic in Sports and more specifically Mixed Martial Arts. I am truly honoured to serve and deeply appreciative to our coach, Troy Bobb, the team leaders, and the planning committee headed by (Troy Phillips) members Sherwin Sandy and Dr. Sawan Jagnairn, Rommel St Hill, Roland Fanfair, Mark George, and Neville Persaud for the dedication, commitment and hard work invested into making this possible.”

The team, which consists of members of the Guyana Police Force Martial Arts Academy, comprises Shenese Bobb [lightweight], Trevlon Clarke [welterweight], Ijaz Cave [middleweight], and Carl Ramsay [heavyweight].

Guyana made its international debut at the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) Amateur World Championship in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in January 2022. Cave and Carlos D’Anjou were the representatives in the Middle East.

Singh declared, “The support and opportunity given to our Federation from International Mixed Martials Federation has been astounding. In particular President Kerrith Brown, President Jason Fraser, and Gosha London have gone beyond the call of duty to ensure that our federation met all the requirements.”

He added, “I also want to thank Commissioner Clifton Hicken for supporting the athletes and Federation in ensuring our country produces exquisite officers and athletes. Deputy Commissioner Calvin Brutus for the administrative support through the Guyana Police Force. A special thank you to our lead sponsor and partner, Beharry Restaurant Holding (KFC), for their support. Mr. Mohamed “Shell” Managing Director of Mohamed Enterprise for also partnering with us and giving the additional moral support to our athletes, and Fabian Shaw, Co-Founder of Zoon Inc.”
