Security guard remanded over shooting of man at West Coast bar

A security guard was yesterday remanded to prison after he allegedly discharged a firearm in a Leonora, West Coast Demerara bar and wounded a man.

Twenty-five-year-old Kadeem Andrews, of Lot 33 Crane Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara (WCD) appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charge.

 He was not required to plead and was remanded to prison until June 17.

According to a statement from the police, the shooting incident occurred on May 15, at about 02:30hrs at the Eclipse Bar located at Leonora, WCD.

The victim, who has been identified as Ricardo Poloram, of De Willem, WCD, was said to have been drinking with friends at the bar.

He then left to go outside to urinate, as he was re-entering the bar, he was confronted by Andrews and an argument ensued between the two.

The police report stated that during the argument, Andrews allegedly went into a ‘side-bag’, pulled out a 9mm Taurus pistol, and discharged a round at Poloram.

The man was hit in the neck and subsequently fell to the ground. He was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was treated by a doctor and later sent away.  Andrews was arrested on the same date and was informed of the offence he had committed. The handgun with 9 matching rounds was lodged at the Leonora Police Station.

The area was examined for the spent shell but none was found. Several CCTV cameras which were seen attached to the premises are currently being reviewed by investigators.
