A Port Mourant, Corentyne carpenter is now bedridden after he was stabbed in the knee by an overseas-based Guyanese on April 18.

The assailant returned to the United States  the day after the incident.

Sewnarine Dhanai, 36, of Lot 27 Port Mourant, yesterday explained that his brother was hosting a wedding and he was present assisting when the overseas-based Guyanese requested six food items for himself and his friends.

“He and me brother is friends so he come for the wedding… So them deh sit in one circle and me give them the food and them eat so he tell me let me sit down with them and gaff lil bit so me take one chair and sit next to he and he deh telling me how me brother want give he beer fa drink. According to Dhanai, this seemed to annoy the man who then hit him in the head with his beer bottle after which he stabbed him in his knee.

Dhanai, who immediately became unconscious, was picked up and rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital. “I don’t know what happen after that all I catch myself in the hospital”, the man noted yesterday.

Dhanai was transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he spent twenty-six days during which he underwent two surgeries. He said the doctors have since explained to him that he has to remain in bed for at least six months after which he will have to undergo several months of therapy.

An emotional Dhanai yesterday related that his family is currently suffering due to his situation as he was the breadwinner for the home. The father of three said that his two older children have not been able to attend school due to their current financial situation. His second child was supposed to be preparing to write the upcoming National Grade Six examination.

“Me deh from hospital bed to me home bed, me get bedpan in the room here. If me want one cup water or medication somebody got to hand me. “But is na true, them na give we nothing, not one sweetie, me na go lie to you, nothing them na give we, we na make no settlement, them na get no paper, only God know wah we going through.”

“He fly out the next day and when we brother go over back and go talk with he, he call out my brother to fight and my brother had to report it to the police over deh”. Dhanai relayed.

According to the couple, investigators have since visited the home and taken several statements, and have informed them that the matter will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.
