The Chief of Staff, Officers and Ranks of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) have extended congratulations to Leading Rating (LR) Stephon Matthews who received the Commandant’s award as the Top Student for the Patrol Craft Coxwain Course conducted by the Caribbean Military Maritime Training Centre at Port Royal Jamaica, recently.

A release from the GDF said that Matthews was among 13 students from seven countries who underwent training on the 8-week programme, from March 28 to May 20, 2022. The course provides candidates with the skills and knowledge to function independently and effectively in performing their duties as the coxswain of an auxiliary craft in the onshore and offshore environment.

Matthews is the second Guyanese rank to have achieved top honours in this international course. The first was LR Keith Ferrier while Petty Officer Mark Rover won the Runner-Up prize in 2020.
