Kobras tame GDF 72-65

Kobras and Ravens recorded contrasting wins when the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) ‘Andrew Ifill Memorial’ Knockout Championship continued on Sunday evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue.

Kobras defeated Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 72-65. Drexel Aaron top scored in the win with 19 points, with Trevor Smith the next best scorer on 17 points. Adding 13, 11, and 10 points apiece were Jermaine Slater, Patrick Reid, and Carlos Edwards.

For the loser, Rondel Edwards, and Ronaldo Niles scored 14, and 12 points each, while the duo of Kevin Richards, and Drunson McAulay scored 10 points each. Trailing 26-30 at the end of the first half, Kobras seized the lead at 50-48, after outhustling the GDF unit 24-18 in the pivotal third period.

Kobras then sealed the come-from-behind victory in the final quarter, scoring 22 points, while restricting GDF to 17 points.

Meanwhile, Ravens dismissed Mambas 71-46. Timothy Thompson was the primary threat with 21 points, whilst Jude Corlette, and Nigel Bowen scored 16, and 10 points correspondingly. For the loser, Emmanuel Archibald tallied 17 points, whilst Brandon Bento, and Akil Lewis tallied eight points each.

The opening period set the tone for a lopsided encounter, as Ravens soared to a 16-8 lead. The lead was further concretised in the second stanza, as Ravens tallied 21 points, while restricting Mambas to 12 points to enter the halftime break ahead at 37-18.

Mambas marginally reduced the deficit at 51-34 after outscoring Ravens 16-14. Nonetheless, the contest was sealed in the fourth period, as Ravens outshot Mambas 20-12.
