Farm fisherman found dead in Mahicony River

Police are investigating the death of a 31-year-old fisherman, whose lifeless body was pulled out of the Mahaicony River on Thursday afternoon.

Dead is Andrew Barnwell, of Farm, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

Barnwell was last seen alive around 19.00hrs on May 31 at Central Mahaicony River while he was drinking with a fellow fisherman of Berbice.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) yesterday confirmed that Barnwell’s body was discovered around 15.55hrs on Thursday by a group of fishermen.

According to the GPF, the 57-year-old fisherman with whom Barnwell had been drinking said that after they were finished consuming the alcohol, the now dead man boarded a boat which was tied alongside his vessel in order to sleep.

The fisherman explained that in the early hours of the following morning, he was awakened by rocking of his boat. Upon checking, he said he discovered his boat was untied.

As a result, he said he secured it after which he called out for Barnwell but got no response.

The fisherman added that he checked around the area but was unable to locate Barnwell so he went back to sleep, the police said.

Later the same day, he said he enquired about Barnwell’s whereabouts from his wife, who told him that she had not seen or heard from him.

As a result, a report was then made to the Mahaicony Police Station.

On Thursday afternoon, Barnwell’s body was discovered floating in the Mahaicony River by a group of fishermen. The police were informed and Barnwell’s body was subsequently retrieved.

It was transported to the Bailey’s Funeral Parlour to await a post-mortem examination.
