West Coast Berbice fire leaves family homeless, one injured

A Number 41 Village, West Coast Berbice family lost their home on Friday to a fire, which also left one person nursing burn injuries. 

According to information gathered by this newspaper, the fire gutted the home of Reggie Hookumchand, 56, at Lot 14 Number 41 Village, around 16:50 hrs on Friday.

Hookumchand resided in the one-storey structure with his son, Leon Omar, 29, his daughter-in-law, Jenita Boodhoo, 26, and their two children, ages six and one.

Sunday Stabroek was told that Boodhoo, who was home alone at the time, first noticed the fire coming from the western bedroom while using the outside washroom. She then quickly informed her husband, who was in the said village at the time.

After quickly arriving home, Omar attempted to put out the fire, resulting in him receiving burn injuries to his left hand and face. He has since been admitted at the Fort Wellington Public Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The man was unable to put out the fire which then quickly spread throughout the house, destroying everything in its path. The Guyana Fire Service was eventually summoned and upon arriving at the scene eventually put out the fire.

The family has since estimated their losses to be over $3 million and are currently seeking lodging at relatives. 

Meanwhile, a house in Region Five was also damaged by fire on Friday. It was started by a child who was reportedly playing with matches.

The Guyana Fire Service was summoned to Number 8 Village, West Coast Berbice, where firefighters were able to put out the fire. However, there was massive damage to the interior of the structure.

Both fires are currently being investigated by the Guyana Fire Service.
